Who is Karl Marx ? « Thread Started on Sept 28, 2004, 3:36am »
Just another passing note.
Who is Karl Marx ?
Well he's no fan of capatalism, that's for sure. Of course, he's no longer alive ( he died in 1883 ) to argue it's inadequacies but his work lives on.
What Work ?
He produced a body of work so famous that the gazillions of ideas and theories and the revolutionary ideology which flowed from it are simply referred to as Marxism .
So What's the Guts of Marxism ?
Well, Marx reckoned a society was defined by the way it produced goods and services because humans by their very nature, he thought, were driven to produce. Therefore, capatalism - in which a small percentage of the people owns the means of production - offers up a world of exploitation and alienation.
The bourgeois ( as he named the capatalists ) had all the power, growing rich and happy on the backs of the proletariat ( working class ) who had been convinced to sell their very human nature and most definitely their power for a miserly wage.
So Was He A Red Flag Waver, Then ?
He predicted capatalism was a ticking time bomb. Eventually, he thought , the working class would revolt, overthrowing capatalism and replacing it with socialism and eventually communism.
He Died An Awfully Long Time Ago. Is Any Of This Really Relevant ?
Is Shakespeare relevant ? Is Freud relevant ? Is Darwin relevant ? Marx's work has had a profound and lasting impact on philosophy, economics, academia, communism and socialism.

Interesting .
Ideology changes the course of politics . We see Countries move towards Socialism like the Soviet Russia and Communism being pushed into the background.
Then we see the Communist resistance in China with the old guard trying to hold off moves to take that Country more toward Socialism .
Is Modern day Socialism the ideology for what really is the floundering of Western Civilization ?
One wonders . It is going to be interesting to watch China over the next few years to watch the pressure going on the Old guard by the new Western educated wealthy youth ..

China will become the worlds largest economy . They need to really take a long hard look at their human relations first, as many western countries see that as a negative to doinf trade with them , except NZ of course . Our PM will be only too happy to trade with them reguardless of how many jobs it costs us due to their cheap goods flooding in once she has given them any old story to get a free trade deal going .
